March Corolation

Alumni Award Winner

The Coro New York Leadership Center takes great pride in announcing the 2013 Coro Alumni Honoree, Amardeep Singh. A graduate of Coro's New American Leader class of 2005, Amardeep is a co-founder and the current Director of Programs for the Sikh Coalition.

The Sikh Coalition was founded as the response to bigotry, violence and discrimination against New York City's Sikh population in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Today, the Coalition is the nation's largest Sikh civil rights organization working toward the realization of civil and human rights for all people.

As the Director of Programs, Amardeep leads the Coalition's advocacy, organizing, and litigation efforts. Along with Department of Homeland Security officials, Amardeep helped to formulate guidelines governing the searches of Sikh passengers in U.S. airports. His work also led to the formulation of a regulation protecting 1.1 million New York City public school students from bias-based harassment in schools.

He has represented the Sikh community during meetings with the United States Attorney General, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Secretary of Transportation, and the Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Amardeep's dedication to social justice is clearly evident in the accomplishments of the Sikh Coalition as well as his appointment by President Obama to the White House Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.  Amardeep is an extraordinary example of the impact that Coro alumni are having on our city and our world.

Reflecting on his Coro Experience, Amardeep had this to say: "What continues to amaze me after all these years is the power of he Coro Alumni Network. Almost 10 years later, members of my graduating class have sprung into major city and national leaders. For example, in the last six months, I have spoken at a press conference in the United States Senate, done the same on the steps of City Hall, written a grant application, shared office space after Hurricane Sandy, and appeared at a White House function all with my Coro class alumni. If you told me ten years ago that I would be sitting at the same tables as my Coro class and still making change, I would not have believed it. I love how we are there for each other and how I truly formed relationships and friendships that will last a lifetime. Coro has been indispensable professionally and personally. I'm so proud and grateful to call myself and alum"
